Bij StorageReview.com is een review verschenen over de Deskstar 60GXP hardeschijven van IBM. Deze nieuwe generatie hardeschijven is uitgerust met platters van 20GB en is beschikbaar in de smaken 20, 40 en 60GB. Afgezien van de platter capaciteit heeft de schijf dezelfde specificaties als de schijven uit de 75GXP serie, een 2MB buffer en ATA-100 ondersteuning.
Uit de benchmarks blijkt dat er qua performance weinig verschil zit tussen de 60GXP en 75GXP hardeschijven, het maximale verschil tussen de schijven is in de gunstigste gevallen niet meer dan 10 procent in het voordeel van de 60GXP serie. De conclusie van de reviewer is dan ook dat de 60GXP serie het een prima opvolger is van de 75GXP serie, maar niks schokkends of bijzonders:
The Deskstar series of drives can no longer claim to be among the quietest drives around. Offerings from Maxtor and Western Digital are distinctly quieter when seeking… as should be expected, given the competitions higher access times. After two hours of fully random seeks in our fairly cramped testbed, the 60GXP was quite warm but not hot to the touch. It should work in most systems without the use of active cooling.
In the end, IBM's Deskstar 60GXP delivers eerily similar performance to that of its predecessor. This may to many be a disappointment. In this day and age, however, simple maintenance of performance is welcomed. The 75GXP, after all, managed to fend off all comers and retain its long-standing StorageReview.com leaderboard slot. The 60GXP stands poised to take its place.
