Intel Corp., Santa Clara, Calif., is expected to increase its capital spending this year to $7 billion, up from its originally projected $5 billion, Merrill Lynch & Co. Inc. reported this week.The microprocessor giant is boosting its capital spending to accelerate its move to 0.13-micron wafer processing, and to add capacity to meet soaring demand.
Intel is still looking to acquire another chip maker's empty fab shell to enable a fast production ramp-up, industry sources said.
